Comments from Hans Vestberg - CEO

"As I've said throughout the year, we have all the assets we need to extend our number one position in the market. Our strategy remains unchanged and we're delivering on everything we promised, and we're gaining momentum on all of five vectors of growth. We have more paths to grow than anybody else and we're confident with our growth targets throughout the years based on our third quarter and continued momentum into the fourth quarter."

"We continue to provide the best-in-class experience across the board. On the network front, third parties continue to recognize us as the best network experience. These includes RootMetrics for the 16th consecutive time and J.D. Power for the 27th consecutive time. Our network team is doing a great job."

"On the commercial front, we've got great momentum into five-year adoption, with over 25% of our consumer phone base using a 5G-capable device. This is tracking well ahead of the 4G adoption, as I've said before. For context, 12 months of the 4G launched, 10% of the devices were in 4G. Less than 12 months after 5G DSS launched, more than the double were on 5G devices and it's growing at a rapid pace. These combined with our millimeter-wave strategy is an important combination and that is paying off."

"For Business segment, we continue to add wireless subscribers and take broadband share in our ILEC footprint with Fios. And finally, we delivered significant value creation and strategy refinement with a sale of the Verizon Media Group in September, depending TracFone acquisition and also the issuance of our third green bond, which is a vital step towards our net zero goal in 2035."

"Our strategy is becoming a national broadband provider with the best access to the tech for our customers includes Fios, fixed wireless access on 5G, 4G millimeter-wave and C-Band. When it comes to the mobile edge compute, we are the mobile edge compute leader, both in public and private."

"Thanks for great partnerships. And we just announced a private mobile edge compute partnership with Amazon that we're pleased with. And this just scratches the surface on how we will continue to utilize our assets. We're confident in our growth opportunities as we move into the investment cycle with C-Band."

Highlights from 2020 CEO's Letter to Shareholders

Hans Vestberg
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Hans Vestberg Verizon CEO Letter to Shareholders

"By the end of 2020, we had 2,700 cities on our Nationwide 5G network, serving 230 million people. In addition, we had introduced 5G Ultra Wideband to more than 60 metro areas across the U.S.—expansion made possible by our growth in the millimeter-wave technology at the heart of Ultra Wideband."

"In the fall, we announced millimeter-wave network deals with two of our leading network partners, Corning and Samsung, delivering 5G radio nodes for retail and other venue deployments."

"More recently, we’ve entered into an agreement with Crown Castle to lease 15,000 small cells to support both millimeter-wave Ultra Wideband and 5G Nationwide."

"In 2020, Verizon became the first company in the world to launch MEC, in partnership with Amazon Web Services. We also launched private MEC with Azure, teaming with Microsoft. In addition, we announced 5G and MEC co-innovation collaborations with IBM, SAP and Deloitte."

"We’re well-positioned and optimistic about the future. This momentum has continued into early 2021, as we continue to protect and enable our employees, serve our customers and drive progress. One very powerful example was the recent C-Band auction, the largest spectrum auction the telecom industry has ever seen. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add a game-changing amount of high-quality spectrum to our portfolio —and I am thrilled with what we were able to accomplish. We succeeded in more than doubling our holdings in the vital mid-band spectrum, gaining licenses that will cover the entire contiguous 48 states."

Verizon Global Network & Technology

Verizon is focusing capital spending on adding capacity and density to 4G LTE network, while also building the next generation 5G network. Verizon is densifying the network by utilizing small cell technology, in-building solutions and distributed antenna systems. Network densification enables Verizon to add capacity to address increasing mobile video consumption and the growing demand for IoT products and services on the company's 4G LTE and 5G networks. Over the past several years, Verizon has been leading the development of 5G wireless technology industry standards and the ecosystems for fixed and mobile 5G wireless services.

The company is evolving the architecture of networks to a next-generation multi-use platform, providing improved efficiency and virtualization, increased automation and opportunities for edge computing services that will support both fiber-based and radio access network technologies. Verizon expects this new architecture will simplify operations by eliminating legacy network elements, speed the deployment of 5G wireless technology and create new opportunities in the business market in a cost efficient manner.

Over the past several years, the company has been leading the development of 5G wireless technology industry standards and the ecosystems for fixed
and mobile 5G wireless services. Verizon expects that 5G technology will provide higher throughput and lower latency than the current fourth-generation (4G) (LTE) technology and enable networks to handle more traffic as the number of internet-connected devices grows. As of December 31, 2020, the company has launched 5G Ultra Wideband Network in 61 U.S. markets.

Verizon also launched its 5G Nationwide Network in October 2020, which is available in over 2,700 cities across the U.S. covering approximately 230 million people. 5G Nationwide uses low and mid-band spectrum and dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology, which allows 5G service to run simultaneously with 4G LTE on multiple spectrum bands. With DSS, whenever customers move outside Verizon’s high-band Ultra Wideband coverage area, their 5G-enabled devices will remain on 5G technology using the lower spectrum bands where the 5G Nationwide network is available.
