The 2018 Fortune 1000 List is Out

The 2018 Fortune 1000 list was published on May 21, 2018.


These 1000 companies represent the driving force behind the U.S. economy with $14.3 Trillion Dollars in annual revenues in 2017. There are more than 33.6 million people employed by these 1,000 companies. Walmart employs 2.3 million people while A-Mark Precious Metals (Fortune #404) only employs 126 people.

Walmart has been ranked in the #1 spot for six straight years in a row.

General Electric fell five spots to #18, which marks its lowest ranking ever. To compound this fall, GE recently lost its place in the elite Dow Jones Industrial average, a place it held since 1907.

Apple (Fortune #4) continues to rake in the profits and ranks the most profitable amongst the Fortune ranked companies with $48.3 Billion in 2017 profits. On the flip side of the coin, Citigroup lost about $6.8 Billion dollars, which is more than 600 Fortune ranked companies make in annual revenues.

Amazon (Fortune #8) is out to dominate and take names later. They entered the top 10 for the first time ever and put the fear in a lot of companies. In fact, Amazon just entered the pharmacy business with the acquisition of PillPack for $1 Billion and sent the shares of CVS, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Rite Aid, and Express Scripts, into a tail spin.

Only 54 of the Fortune 1000 are headed by female CEOs including PepsiCo (Fortune #45), PG&E (Fortune #168), Hertz (#335), Lockheed Martin (#59), General Motors (#10), and Hershey (#379). Denise Morrison retired as the CEO at Campbell Soup as of May 18, 2018.

Envision Healthcare had the biggest jump this year moving from Fortune Rank #538 to Fortune Rank #198. This is probably a reflection of the state of the U.S. economy.

There are 63 newcomers to the 2018 Fortune 1000 list including Schneider National (#567), ADT (#578), Square (#906), Teradyne (#928), Valvoline (#933), ServiceNow (#974), and Vail Resorts (#985).

Knight-Swift Transportation dropped 263 spots to claim the title of the biggest fall in 2018 having been ranked #586 in 2017. Swift Transportation acquired Knight Transportation on September 8, 2017, in a reverse merger.

5 of the top 6 most valuable Fortune 1000 companies are in the technology sector. They include Apple, Alphabet/Google, Microsoft, and Facebook. Berkshire Hathaway ranks as the 5th most valuable company but isn't considered a technology company.

There are 185 companies that have been on the Fortune 1000 list every year for the past 24 years, including GE, GM, Chevron and Exxon Mobil. The oldest company on the list was started in 1784 by Alexander Hamilton, Bank of New York Mellon.

California has the most amount of Fortune 1000 ranked companies with 117. Texas has 94, New York has 93, Illinois has 70, and Ohio has 57.
